San Francisco contractor David Hewes, friend of Central Pacific President Leland Stanford, was disappointed to discover no one had prepared a commerative item for the completion of. We especially enjoyed talking to the ‘engineer’. The Golden Spike Event Center is a multi use facility that spans over 150 outdoor acres and 149,250 sq. On Dec 18th, 2004 in Ogden Utah, The Golden Spike was again used, this time as a symbol of the Union of two Masonic Lodges: Weber Lodge 6 & George Washington Lodge 24. I suggest you start with the movie, then the exhibits inside, then make your way outside to see the engines and the ‘golden spike’ location. The CPRR eventually purchased 53 miles (85 km) of UPRR-built grade from Promontory Summit (MP 828) to Ogden, Utah Territory (MP 881), which became the interchange point between trains of the two roads. Basically this is an NPS, National Park site and a good one, even if a bit off the beaten path.
